Reading Portfolio

Description:
This week we have had a deadline we need to finish. The deadline was to find a tick-tac-toe do for our Reading Portfolio. This deadline had to be finished by this friday the 5th of June. We had to chose 1 activity from the tic-tac-toe I have chosen what's a prefix. My Goal during Literacy is Expand Vocabulary. I am getting better at my goal because I have learnt more words. Here is my tic-tac-toe I have chosen.

Tri stands for three like for an example, Triathlon it has three  sports in it, so everything that starts with tri has three meanings. These are the ones that do have three meanings.
  • Triathlon
  • Triangle

Success Criteria:

  • Re-Read
  • Read on
  • Lists of words
  • Base or root word
  • Cause and effect
  • Synonyms
  • Comparisons and contrasts

Big Idea:
My tic-tac-toe was what is a prefix. Our task was to find words that started with tri. I found out words from the Dictionary and what I all ready new. Next time I need to work on making sure the word is spelt correctly and if it is real or not.

Evaluation:
What I need to work on is find out new words from the dictionary or ask a friend that I could use it in my writing I don't all ready know. I need to work on synonyms in my reading because I don't use that one much as re-read & read on.

Feedback & Feedforward:
Great work Sophie.
It is pretty difficult to come up with all those words by yourself. Maybe next time you could add words that you actually know their meaning instead of making up words you think are real. Well done though :D Aye

13 Storey Tree House

WALT: Create via Collaboration

Description:
What are we doing? Why are we doing it? How are we doing it? Who is in my group? What is your group building? Where do we do it? How often do we do it?

We are building a 13-storey treehouse on minecraft because we have read the book in class and we wanted to express our creativity by making what we think it looks like. We are doing it because Troy has read us the 13-storey tree house. We are building the 13 story tree house because we are using our creative knowledge into building the 13 storey tree house. We are doing it on minecraft. In my group is Inara Lachlan Olivia and Kate. Our group is building The Trunk, Elevator, Kitchen, Game room, And the main deck.

If you want to know what the 13 storey tree house is, well it is a story by Andy Griffiths.

Positive: (What are the good things about doing this?)

I think the positive thing are, that we are going through it well, and it is looking good so far while we are building it.

Minus: (What are the tricky or not so good things about dong this?)

The bad things are, that there are a few bumps in the road, when I mean bumps in the road i mean a some arguments, Also there is internet issues on the ipads sometimes and this stops us getting online and being able to build.

Interesting: (What is something that you find interesting about this Eg: Not good or bad)

Well I am thinking of what is interesting is that if we can make it all the way to the 36 storey tree house. Or if we can finish the 13 storey tree house.

Super Moon

WALT: Inform

Last night the Moon got closer to us than it has ever been. Not all of New Zealand saw it because it was too cloudy in some towns. They even talked about it on the National News because it hasn't happened for many years. So they talked about the moon on the news.

If I saw the moon I would of felt so jumpy and pointing at the moon to Mum and Dad with my mouth open in a surprise. I would have been talking about it to all of my friends. So I wished I had seen it.

We learned that the Moon goes around us, while Earth goes around the sun. It also takes a year to go round the sun but the sun stays in one place, it doesn't move around like the moon and we do. So it takes 365 and 1/4 days going around the sun.

We also learned that there used to be 9 planets now there are 8 because scientists discovered Pluto is just a rock so now there are only 8. So when the moon got closer to us than it has ever been they called it... THE SUPER MOON.

Reading Portfolio Sample

Nearly 40 people in Auckland have recently been diagnosed with the infectious measles disease.
Westlake Boys High School on Aucklands North Shore is one of the hardest hit communities with 20 ill students.
Several other Westlake Boys High pupils who have not been immunised against measles have been asked to stay away for the next two weeks.
Measles is a very serious disease that is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
The symptoms include fever, a cough, sore eyes and a rash. There is no treatment, and complications can be severe.
The Auckland Health Service has estimated that around 750 people are at immediate risk of catching the highly contagious disease.
Dr. Julia Peters said the Health Service had been working with the North Shore school for just over a week when the first case of measles was found there.
"This is definitely more than what we'd normally see. We're working hard to contain the measles within the Auckland region."
Dr. Peters said many people who had come down with the disease had recently been overseas and, in particular, in the Philippines.
The public health service has sent information to parents and students at Westlake Boys High and asked that those students who are not sure whether they have been immunised against measles to stay away.
"What we're trying to do is isolate those students as well as those who have measles, because students who are not immunised can get sick," she said.
Another seven cases of measles in Auckland are being investigated - three of them from the same school.
What to watch for Symptoms
* High fever.
* Runny nose, cough, red eyes.
* Small white spots inside mouth.
* Red, blotchy rash on face and neck and later over entire body.

WALT: Analysing an article
Task: Answer questions based on a Newspaper Article.
Success Criteria:
  • Show critical thinking in your answers.
  • Answer questions in full sentences.
  • Use correct spelling and punctuation.

1) How do people contract measles? People contract the measles by coughing and sneezing it on to other people, It is also contagious a disease to spread in such a way.

2) Why do you think so many students at Westlake High School have contracted measles? I think they have got the measles because other people that have the measles have coughed and sneezed on other people. The people that have the measles need to be careful around other kids.

3) What is the Auckland Health Services main role in this measles outbreak? What they are trying to do is contain the measles so other people can't get it.

4) In the article Dr. Peters said “many people who had come down with the disease had recently been overseas and, in particular, in the Philippines.” Why do you think this is? I think that someone had it from Philippines and came to new Zealeand. If I had it I would have a hanky or a tissues in my pocket.

5) In your opinion what would be the best way to avoid getting measles? If someone was going to cough  or sneezes I'm going to go away so I don't get it.

Use the following criteria to assess yourself and your peer
  • Show critical thinking in your answers.
  • Answer questions in full sentences.
  • Use correct spelling and punctuation.

Peer Assessment: I think Sophie did a good job because she describe how she could help and what she can do to stop it. I think she could improve on making some of her sentence longer so it explains more.

New Flag

WALT: Add The Union Jack represents the commonwealth and is the flag of the United Kingdom. Yes I agree we need a new flag because it will make our country more popular. Also it will make our country stronger. We could have a silver fern because it is a symbol of New Zealand, which is used on the clothing of sportspeople of New Zealand. We could but it under the Union Jack. So we can still have the same flag but newer. I don't think that the silver fern is weak because I don't think it will look like a feather. Here's the link to read it. Hope you enjoy it. http://www.kiwikidsnews.co.nz/new-zealand-get-new-flag
